A bold move has been made by the Department of War, severing its ties with Harvard University for military education. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, in a video statement, declared an end to all professional military education, fellowships, and certificate programs with Harvard, starting in the 2026-27 academic year. He cited Harvard's 'woke' culture as incompatible with the values of the War Department.
Hegseth, a Harvard graduate himself, acknowledged the military's long-standing relationship with the Ivy League school. However, he argued that Harvard has become a hub for 'Hate America' activism, with faculty members openly critical of the military and its values.
"They've replaced open inquiry with rigid orthodoxy," Hegseth stated, adding that the high tuition fees were not justifiable given the negative portrayal of the armed forces on campus.
This decision comes amidst an ongoing feud between the Trump administration and Harvard. President Donald Trump has sought $1 billion in damages from the university, targeting it as part of a federal funding crackdown on antisemitism and 'woke' ideology.
Hegseth's criticism extended beyond Harvard's academic environment. He alleged that research programs at the university had collaborated with the Chinese Communist Party and that the campus celebrated Hamas, allowed attacks on Jews, and prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives over national principles.
"Why should we support an environment that undermines our nation's values?" Hegseth asked, emphasizing that the War Department will no longer tolerate such an atmosphere.
Hegseth also took aim at the Ivy League as a whole, accusing these institutions of institutional bias and a lack of viewpoint diversity. He plans to evaluate existing graduate programs for active-duty service members at Ivy League schools and other civilian universities, comparing their effectiveness and cost to public universities and military graduate programs.
"We will maximize taxpayer value and build deterrence," Hegseth said, "not by spending millions on universities that undermine our mission and country."
In a strong conclusion, Hegseth declared, "We train warriors, not wokesters. Harvard, good riddance."
This decision has sparked controversy and will undoubtedly continue to do so. What are your thoughts on the War Department's decision to cut ties with Harvard?
