Sri Lanka's Dominance Shines at the T20 World Cup: A 105-Run Victory Over Oman
Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup campaign got off to a flying start with a commanding 105-run victory over Oman, setting the tone for a promising tournament run.
The co-hosts showcased their batting prowess, with Pavan Rathnayake, Kusal Mendis, and captain Dasun Shanaka all reaching half-centuries. Their combined efforts propelled Sri Lanka to a formidable 225, the highest total at the 2026 tournament so far.
Oman, an Associate nation, struggled to keep up, managing only 120-9 in response. The match was a stark contrast in batting performances, with Sri Lanka's dominance shining through.
Dasun Shanaka, under pressure after a recent slump in form, delivered a sensational late surge. His 19-ball 50, including two fours and five sixes, was the fastest fifty by a Sri Lankan in T20 internationals, surpassing his own previous record.
Earlier, after losing openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara, Rathnayake's 28-ball 60 and Kusal Mendis' composed 61 off 45 set the perfect platform for Shanaka's onslaught. Together, they took Sri Lanka to 225-5, the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history for the team.
Oman, already staring at a huge defeat, saw only two batters reach double figures: Muhammad Nadeem and Wasim Ali. While Nadeem, 40, needed 52 runs to reach his half-century and remained unbeaten on 53, Wasim departed for a 20-ball 27, falling well short of the target.
Sri Lanka, who beat Ireland by 20 runs in their opener, will take on Australia next at the same venue on Monday. Oman, facing their second defeat, will face Ireland in Colombo on Saturday. But here's where it gets controversial... Will Oman be able to bounce back and challenge the favorites? And this is the part most people miss... Sri Lanka's dominance may have been impressive, but Oman's batting struggles could be a sign of a deeper issue within the team. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
