A sudden twist of fate has the Pittsburgh Steelers facing a massive dilemma centered around tight end Pat Freiermuth, with trade talks looming large on the horizon.
The Steelers had high hopes when they drafted Freiermuth in the 2021 NFL Draft, envisioning him as a cornerstone of their offensive strategy. His rookie year, playing alongside Ben Roethlisberger, proved his worth with a solid and reliable performance. NFL analyst Gregg Rosenthal recently addressed this situation on his podcast, suggesting that the Steelers might seriously consider trading Freiermuth before the 2026 season. With a new regime led by Mike McCarthy, the team is navigating roster construction, offensive direction, and long-term planning, which could lead to some unexpected decisions.
"Pat Freiermuth barely saw the field last year, and he's due for a hefty $9.1 million in compensation this season. His contract is very tradeable, and McCarthy might have a different vision for him. It's certainly a possibility," Rosenthal said.
The Steel City has already undergone significant changes with Mike Tomlin's departure. The Steelers are expected to part ways with tight end Jonnu Smith, while Darnell Washington recovers from a season-ending injury.
The idea of trading Freiermuth now is intriguing, and Rosenthal believes there's a market for him. "He didn't seem to click with Rodgers for some reason, but I think he'd find a home elsewhere. He's in his prime, a solid player, but maybe he's not the right fit for Pittsburgh anymore," Rosenthal added.
Freiermuth's 2025 season was expected to be a breakout year with Rodgers on the team. The Steelers had three tight ends sharing the target load, but many questioned why Freiermuth wasn't getting more opportunities, especially in critical game moments where he consistently delivered clutch plays.
With Mike McCarthy at the helm, it will be fascinating to see how he utilizes Freiermuth and the rest of the roster. If McCarthy doesn't see Freiermuth as a long-term offensive asset, a trade could be on the cards.
