Manchester United's Stunning Resurgence: 878 Days in the Making
Believe it or not, Manchester United are currently one of the most in-form teams in world football. It's been a wild ride for the Red Devils, with on-field stability surprisingly outpacing the drama unfolding behind the scenes.
And this is the part most people miss: they've only lost three Premier League games all season, a stark contrast to last December's five-loss slump.
Under the interim leadership of Michael Carrick, United are on a five-game unbeaten streak, with an impressive nine-game unbeaten run in the Premier League – the longest active streak of any top-flight club. This resurgence has propelled them to fourth place in the Premier League table and, even more remarkably, back into the Opta Power Rankings Top 10 for the first time since September 2023 – a staggering 878 days ago.
But here's where it gets controversial: can they sustain this momentum?
The Opta Power Rankings, a global data model updated weekly, assigns teams a score between 0 and 100 based on their performance. United's current ranking of 10th, with a score of 92.4, is a testament to their recent turnaround, edging out Real Madrid (92.3) who were ranked number one as recently as June 2024.
This climb is even more impressive considering United's recent history. At the end of the 2024/25 season, after a disappointing 15th place finish in the Premier League and a Europa League final loss, they plummeted to a lowly 45th in the rankings, trailing behind teams like Al-Hilal, Crystal Palace, and Bologna.
Is this a temporary blip or a sign of a sustained revival?
Carrick's impact has been undeniable, but the question remains: can United maintain this form under his leadership or will they need a permanent managerial appointment to solidify their position?
The Opta Power Rankings, while not awarding any trophies, are a strong indicator of a team's trajectory. Currently, Arsenal sit atop the rankings with Manchester City in second, both teams United have beaten in the past year, further highlighting their potential.
Can United challenge for the title this season, or is a top-four finish a more realistic goal?
Rúben Amorim's prediction of United hitting rock bottom last season seems eerily accurate. Now, with the club on the rise again, the future looks brighter. But the road ahead is far from certain.
